Product Review: Honey Stinger Waffles and Gel

I had a great time at Fleet Feet Essex Junction the other night and picked up all sorts of new things to try out, which will be popping up here over the next couple of weeks. One of the huge benefits of base building is that I can try out all sorts of new things and not worry about “ruining” my long run.

The first set of things I’ve tried were from Honey Stinger, which apparently still has Lance Armstrong as a spokesperson. Questionable. I got a honey waffle, a chocolate waffle and a pomegranate gel. I tried the first two before and during my long run respectively on Saturday and the last before my run today. Overall, I shot 1 for 3. I LOVED the honey waffle for pre-run fuel. It was sweet but had interesting texture and generally tasted good and sat well for the first hour of my run. I did not love the pomegranate gel, however, which I found to be cloyingly sweet. If you like Blueberry Nutrigrain bars, you will love this gel. I happen to not like fake blueberry flavor, so this gel is not for me. It didn’t bother my stomach at all, however, so other flavors may work for me in the future. The chocolate waffle came highly recommended but wasn’t for me either. I am not a huge chocolate fan and it seemed very dry and crumbly as I was eating it pre-run. Like the other items, it didn’t bother my stomach at all and I got through an hour run at dinner time with no bonky feeling.

Overall, although the flavors didn’t work out for me, I plan to try other products from HS because they settled so well in my sometimes picky stomach. I’m also planning on ordering a box of the honey waffles for pre-workout and race.

After a massive gel fail last weekend, I’m on the quest again for something tolerable. I used to like the Honey Stingers so I think I’m headed back in that direction!
